Police activity in Kingsland Basin

Many of you will have seen reports in the news about the human head found in the Regents Canal near Kingsland Road

Police have confirmed to us that the head was found in Kingsland Basin, which lies just to the west of Kingsland Road, where it branches off the north side of the canal.

The canal towpath was closed on Sunday afternoon to allow a police search, but reopened at 2pm yesterday. Officers will continue to search the surrounding area over the next few days.

The media have linked the discovery to the murder of Gemma McCluskie who's body was found in March near Broadway Market. Her brother Tony McCluskie has been charged with murder and is due to stand trial in November.

Police say a post mortem will be undertaken today (Tuesday) and any confirmation of identity is not likely before the end of the week.

The BBC report on the discovery is here. The De Beauvoir Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team can be contacted here. Please do get in contact if you have any questions or concerns.

Update (12th September): Police have today confirmed that the head found is that of Gemma McCluskie. You can read more here.
