Big improvement in Hackney GCSE results

The trend in Hackney’s schools provisional GCSE results is up, in some cases dramatically so. Haggerston, Hackney Free and Parochial and Cardinal Pole have all improved by 10% or more on the new tougher measure of pupils who get five A* to C GCSE’s including English and Maths. Mossbourne Community Academy has raised the bar for all schools in Hackney with 84% of its pupils achieving this result. The average for Hackney in 2009 is 52% which is better than last years national average of 47.6% . The full set of provisional results is:

Cardinal Pole                                                           51%

Clapton Girls                                                           49%

Hackney Free and Parochial                                31%

Haggerston Girls                                                    49%

Mossbourne Community Academy                     84%

Our Lady’s Convent                                                69%

Skinner’s Company School for Girls                    30%

Stoke Newington Media and Arts College        48%

Yesodey Hatorah School for Girls                       83%

.

Your councillors welcome this big improvement. Rob Chapman said “These results are a real credit to the pupils and teachers of Hackney”. For the first time next year Haggerston School plans to take boys as well as girls. This will help ease the pressure on De Beauvoir parents who want to send their children to Hackney schools.

Cracking down on anti-social tenants

Hackney Council has cracked down hard on a nuisance household, by wielding new powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.

For the first time in the borough, Hackney Council has granted the police a “premises closure order,” which has successfully ended persistent anti-social behaviour, blighting the lives of local residents at Lucan House on the Colville Estate.

The premises closure order was granted at Thames Magistrate’s court on Friday 4 September and will expire on 4 December 2009.

A property in Lucan House had become a hub for persistent drug taking, fights, loud music, noise and suspected prostitution, creating an atmosphere of threat and intimidation within this block on the Colville Estate.

Under the Premises Closure Order, the property is now secured and any person trying to get in will be committing a criminal offence. The premises closure order is a new power, brought in in 2008, as part of the Antisocial Behaviour Act (2003). It enables councils to work in partnership with police to close down a property, where residents or their friends are presenting a “serious nuisance” to the community.

Lucan House is a Newlon Housing Association flat but sits in a neighbourhood of Hackney Homes properties. Council residents had complained about this household in early June 2009. On 16 June, a drugs warrant was executed, which uncovered cannabis.

Hackney makes 10:10 climate pledge

Hackney Council has become one of the ten local authorities from across the country to unite behind one simple idea: a 10% cut in carbon emissions during 2010. It’s called 10:10, and we want everyone to be a part of it.

The success of 10:10 depends on getting everyone involved in making it happen, and the 10:10 website has all the tools you need to pass the message on far and wide. Visit 1010uk.org and sign up now. We have.

Keeping De Beauvoir streets safer

Local Councillors have congratulated our local police team on their highly successful 'Operation Akuna' - a week long night time operation to reduce drug related street nuisance around Kingsgate Estate.

Key arrests were made including 8 for possession of class A & class B drugs, as well as the arrest of an illegal immigrant known to police for drug dealing. The person now awaits deportation.

The team also arerested a man for the posession of an offensive weapon, as well as conducting 117 stop and searches and 46 stop and accounts, 22 of which resulted in arrests.
